Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Johns Hopkins Hospital

A MICU stay can be an invasive and disturbing experience. Many patients go without self-care due to their medical conditions and inability to care for themselves within the ICU, which leads to a loss of both individuality and a sense of normalcy. Going without self-care is a multifactorial issue—patients are immobilized, on ventilators, or facing significant challenges with mood or mental health.

To help boost morale of patients, families, and staff on the MICU and create staff-patient rapport, the team plans to have spa days in the MICU once a month, including facials, mani/pedis, full body baths, and hair washing. The team hopes that when patients feel refreshed, they are able to heal more effectively.
