PATHway to Healing Endometriosis

Terri Mason

Division of Gynecologic Pathology, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics

Endometriosis, the buildup of estrogen-dependent endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterine cavity, is a debilitating condition that remains under-diagnosed and has no cure. Many people with endometriosis experience chronic pain and dysmenorrhea, and some even experience infertility. However, pathologist Terri Mason notes, it can be difficult to get a clear diagnosis and advocate for oneself throughout the treatment process, even as a physician. Leveraging the difficulties she faced as a patient and knowledge she has as a physician, she hopes to expand her reach and help more people navigate their diagnosis.

This team will take a two-pronged approach using grant funding: first, they will create a digital resource for patients recently diagnosed with endometriosis, educating patients about the pathology of the disease, endometriosis management at Johns Hopkins, and resources outside of the hospital. Second, they will create a physical informational postcard to give to new patients sharing quick facts, specialty care, and the digital resource. Ultimately, the goal is to empower patients through education, so they feel more confident in seeking the multidisciplinary treatment they need to have a better quality of life.
