One in three children and teenagers who are patients at the Harriet Lane Primary Care Clinic (HLPC) have a BMI in the overweight or obese category for age. While exercise and diet changes are often recommended during their annual physicals, there is a need for more proactive education regarding healthy weight management targeted towards youth.

The team at HLPC is using IHM funding to produce exercise bags containing equipment and exercise ideas including sessions with community-based athletic coaches and instructors. Handouts featuring approved and evidence-based social media accounts will also be included. By monitoring outcomes of this pilot exercise bag intervention, the HLPC team hopes to gauge this program’s feasibility and guide future interventions surrounding childhood obesity in the community.
