Brain tumor patients have cancers that impact their sense of self, as they experience changes in motor skills, speech, vision, personality, and memory. This creates unique challenges for patients and their loved ones. However, there is currently no comprehensive brain tumor support program for providers and caregivers at Johns Hopkins, leaving patients and caregivers with little organized encouragement as they navigate a dearth of medical appointments and the emotional struggles associated with brain cancer care.
The Neuro-oncology team is using IHM funding to create a 10-week interactive wellness workshop series, concluding with a book club session for brain cancer survivors and caregivers. This series will utilize the “Peace Education Program,” which helps participants reflect upon their humanity and grow inner resources centered around themes including choice, hope, and dignity. The book club session will discuss the book “Hear Yourself: How to Find Peace in a Noisy World.” The team hopes that this structured experience will build social connections and encourage emotional well-being as patients navigate their disease.
