CLOSLER is a platform dedicated to inspiring healthcare professionals and trainees to continually reflect on providing exceptional patient care, drawing its name from Dr. William Osler, a pioneer in medical education. His philosophy of bedside teaching and patient-centered care remains the foundation of CLOSLER’s mission. Organized by the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence (MCACE) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, CLOSLER embodies the academy’s commitment to clinical excellence. The Academy, founded in 2006, honors clinicians who demonstrate mastery in communication, professionalism, diagnostic skills, and a passion for patient care, while also emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning and humanism in medicine.

  • From ICU to canvas, by Zeina Moukarzel, MD, MPH, Beirut, Lebanon

Art is a form of reflection on my career as an ICU physician. Through this painting, I wanted to capture the contrast between the technical aspects of medicine and the emotional reality of losing a loved one.
  • Risorius: the power of a smile, by Eric Last, DO, Northwell Health, Wantagh, New York
  • Wounded healer, by David Kopacz, MD, University of Washington

The name CLOSLER comes from a melding of the words “closer to Osler”. CLOSLER offers content through themes such as Connecting with Patients, Clinical Reasoning, Passion in the Medical Profession, and Lifelong Learning in Clinical Excellence. These areas highlight the importance of empathy, communication, and personal growth in medical practice. The platform integrates creative arts, reflections on medical experiences, and strategies for deepening patient relationships, all in alignment with Osler’s belief that the art of medicine is in observation, compassion, and adaptability. Through its resources, CLOSLER encourages healthcare professionals to continually strive for excellence in patient care and professional development.
