Dr. Katherine C. Chretien, MD

Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs

I care about humanizing medicine because when medicine is practiced with humanism, it is all the more healing for patients and all the more fulfilling and meaningful for the providers of that care.

Activities Related to Humanizing Medicine

Clinical Care:My clinical practice is with the After Care Clinic, a safety-net clinic for patients who have been discharged from the hospital and do not have a primary care provider and/or lack insurance and/or have additional barriers to care.

Education: I created and led a narrative medicine storytelling curriculum for medical students for eight years that involved students co-writing patient stories and sharing these stories with their patients. I now am faculty advisor for a narrative medicine student group.

Research: My medical education research has involved studying educational innovations that promote reflection, humanism, and inclusivity, as well as topics such as trust in the patient-physician relationship and learner well-being.

Leadership/Administrative:I helped found our Hopkins chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2023 and serve as chapter co-advisor. Inducted students engage in activities to help foster humanism in our Hopkins community.
