To care for patients in the most humanized manner, all team members must have access to information about what kind of person their patient is, their likes and dislikes, loved ones, stressful triggers, favorite TV shows. Oftentimes, communicating and connecting with patients on a human level can deescalate stressful situations that may otherwise require restraint and/or pharmacologic intervention. However, many of our patients, at any time during their hospital stay, may be unable to convey their own story.

Gabriela Revesz RN implemented the “Welcome to my World” dry-erase board, engaging patients, families, staff and therapy services to record important information about our patients as human beings. The board allows space to write names of their support team including pets, facts about them (e.g. occupation, hobbies), things that comfort and stress them, cultural, spiritual and religious beliefs, photos and fun facts. Using IHM funding, the team will work to re-design the boards for all inpatient rooms in NCCU department by using human-centered design techniques.
