Dr. Somnath Saha, MD, MPH

Professor of Medicine

I care about humanizing medicine because mutually respectful and trusting patient-clinician relationships are the conduit through which evidence-based, high-quality care must pass in order to reach patients. I care about humanizing medicine because of the pervasive dehumanizing forces in health care that erode the joy of clinical practice and promote inequity by devaluing the lives of Black and other marginalized patients.

Activities Related to Humanizing Medicine

Clinical Care: Attending in Johns Hopkins After Care Clinic, which comprehensively addresses the health and social needs of patients with limited resources and access to care\

Education: Involved in the “Presence 5” curriculum – intended to “redesign the clinical encounter to foster humanism and meaningful connections between clinicians and patients” – in the Osler residency program.

Research: Several research projects aimed at de-stigmatizing the language used to describe patients in the medical record and to enhance patient-clinician relationships, particularly across racial boundaries.
